Journal review (3) : Methodology
Assalamu’alaikum Wr. Wb
Hello good readers, welcome back to
my blog.
On
the previous blog, I explained the review of the journal by Kee Li Li and Ngo
Pei Wen with the title: The Use of Story Map in Improving the Year Four
Pupils’ Ability in Reading Comprehension. This time, I will still discuss
it. Specifically discussing about the methodology of the journal. Enjoy your reading..
The methodology in the journal The
Use of Story Map in Improving the Year Four Pupils’ Ability in Reading
Comprehension includes the following :
The first is Research Design. Researchers conducted the action
research on reading comprehension and motivate students in reading lessons, with
the aim to find the causes of problem in the teaching and learning process and
then looking for problem solving. The researcher applied story map to his
research for four weeks. Beginning with pre-reading comprehension tests, which
students were introduced to vocabulary before. Furthermore, the teacher gives
students narrative texts and explain that text to provide understandable input,
then a question and answer session is conducted to measure how far students
understand the narrative text. After that the teacher introduces, explains and
demonstrates the use of story maps to students, so that they can understand the
task given. The story map contains literary elements which include characters,
settings, events, moral values, problems, and resolutions based on text. Afterwards
students are given a worksheet in the form of a post-reading comprehension test
and directed to answer questions individually based on the text being taught.
It aims to examine students' understanding of the text after the use of story
maps.
The second is Participants. Every student has different English
skills, some of them have less interest and motivation to teach English. They
consider English is difficult to learn, this is caused by their first language
is not English. The Most of students prefer to kinesthetic learning styles.
They like to move and do activities directly rather than listening and reading
from textbooks.
The third is Data Collection Methods and Instruments. There are three
Data Collection Methods and Instruments in this journal, including : a) Pre-reading
comprehension test and post-reading comprehension test, b) Pupils’ work, c) Reflective
Journal.
The last is Technique of Data Analysis. There are two data analysis
techniques that used in this journal, including: The first is qualitative data,
a combination of pre-reading data comprehension tests and post-reading
comprehension tests into diagrams and tables. The second is quantitative data,
the results of interpreting reflective journals and student work results.
